What's under our Asphalt Driveways?

We begin by removing any existing pavement, followed by grading to ensure proper water drainage. Next, a 4-6 inch crushed gravel base is installed and compacted for stability, essential for withstanding local freeze-thaw cycles. A binder layer, composed of large aggregate mixed with oil, is then applied to provide additional strength. Over this, a 2-3 inch layer of hot asphalt is installed, ensuring thickness suitable for New Hampshire’s weather conditions. The surface is thoroughly rolled for smoothness and compacted to create a seamless finish. Final curing takes about 24 hours before use. This method ensures a durable, weather-resistant driveway.

Site Preparation

We begin by removing any existing pavement to create a clean surface for the new driveway. This ensures a solid foundation for the asphalt. Next, we excavate the area to the desired depth to provide ample space for the new driveway. Finally, we grade the area to ensure proper water drainage and prevent pooling, which can lead to damage.
Severely cracked and crumbling asphalt surface requires professional repair or replacement. Extensive alligator cracking and loose pavement fragments reveal the underlying base material. Base Installation

We install crushed gravel base to provide a stable and durable foundation for the asphalt. This base helps to prevent future settling and cracking. The crushed gravel also improves drainage, allowing rainwater to flow away from the driveway and prevent water damage. Additionally, the base helps to distribute the weight of vehicles more evenly, reducing the risk of stress-induced damage.

Binder Layer Installation

We apply a binder layer composed of large aggregate mixed with oil. This layer acts as a binding agent, providing additional strength and stability to the driveway. It helps to prevent the asphalt from cracking and deteriorating over time. The binder layer also improves the asphalt’s resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations, ensuring a more durable and long-lasting driveway.

Asphalt Paving

To finalize we install the hot asphalt to create the finished surface of the driveway. We then roll and compact the asphalt thoroughly to ensure a smooth and even finish. This process also helps to bond the asphalt to the underlying layers, creating a strong and durable surface. Finally, we allow the asphalt to cure for approximately 24 hours before it can be used.
